Have you heard about Captain Citrus?  Captain Citrus joins Marvel’s popular Avengers Assemble characters to defeat the villain, while focusing on making smart food choices along the way! The Florida Department of Citrus teamed up with Marvel Custom Solutions to do comics about the importance of making smart choices about nutrition in ways kids can understand. Captain Citrus starts off his day with a glass of orange juice and the next thing you know he is fighting the bad guys in a orange grove with his heroes the Avengers. That’s just how the first issue starts out, the kids are going to love these comics.

Have comic night with your child so you can read them together. I actually did this tonight online while in chat with one of the kids. When he finished reading the first comic I asked him what he’d learned. He got it that Captain Citrus was pointing out to eat healthier and drink Orange Juice.

I noticed right away in the comics introducing Captain Citrus that the new plate recommendations are there. I am so glad. I love fruits and vegetables because now they take up a bigger portion of the plate than they used to, half of the plate. Grains and proteins take up the other half and don’t forget a portion of dairy.

Captain Citrus also talks about not judging a book by it’s cover and how to keep a positive outlook. All great lessons for kids to see. Better yet it gives you a opening to discuss these topics.

I think one of the most important things a parent can do today is make juice, fruit and vegetables available for snacks. I’ve observed kids that are raised not expecting chips or cookies that when asked what they’d like they usually will take some kind of fruit. And they’ll be happy with it if taught from a young age to eat.

The Captain Citrus website offers two digital comic books, downloadable activity sheets, coloring sheets, crossword puzzles and much more! Let Captain Citrus teach your children how cool healthy eating can be.
