Chewy French Breadsticks

1 1/2 cups lukewarm water (105 degrees0
2 tablespoons sugar
1 envelope dry yeast
4 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg, beaten
onion or garlic powder, parmesan cheese

In a large bowl of an electric mixer, place water, sugar and yeast and allow mixture to rest for 5 minutes or until yeast is softened. Add flour and salt and beat until blended. Use a dough hook, or knead by hand until dough is smooth and soft, about 5 minutes. Do not let dough rise.

Divide dough into 16 pieces. Roll each piece of dough into 1/4″ thick rope and place on a greased cookie sheet. Brush tops with beaten egg and sprinkle top with garlic powder and grated Parmesan (or other choice).

Bake in a 400ºF oven for 15 minutes or until bread sticks are lightly browned.

Yields 16 bread sticks.
