Cherry Crumble Tea Cake

Crumble
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons flour, 1/4 tsp salt
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup chopped almonds
1/4 cup old-fashioned oats

Cake
1 1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup butter
1 egg lightly beaten
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup fresh or frozen cherries pitted and chopped

Preheat oven 350°.

To make Crumble stir together first 5 ingredients. Add butter- using pastry blender mix well. Add almonds and oats mix and set aside.

To make Cake sift first 5 ingredients; add butter; mix (with the pastry blender) until ingredients resemble coarse crumbs. In a small bowl lightly beat egg, buttermilk, and vanilla. Add to dry ingredients; fold till smooth. Pour batter into buttered rectangular baker (11 x 6 3/4 x 2 1/2 h).

Scatter cherries over surface; sprinkle CRUMBLE evenly over top of cake. Bake until cake has risen and is golden brown about 50 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 25 minutes.
