Hazelnut Chocolate Chip Scones
2 C. all-purpose flour
1/3 C. firmly packed dark brown sugar
1 1/2 t. baking powder
1/2 t. baking soda
1/4 t. salt
6 T. butter, chilled and cubed
1/2 C. buttermilk
1 large egg
1 1/2 t. vanilla extract
1 C. chocolate chips
1/2 C. chopped toasted hazelnuts
Preheat oven to 400° F.
Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and salt. Cut in butter with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mix together buttermilk, egg and vanilla; stir into flour. Add chocolate chips and hazelnuts.
Divide dough into 8 pieces; shape into mounds. Bake on a lightly greased baking sheet for 17 to 19 minutes, until lightly browned.
Makes 8 scones.
