Fried Cakes

1 C. sugar

2 T. shortening

2 eggs

1 C. sour milk

1 t. soda

2 heaping t. baking powder

1 t. nutmeg

4 C. flour

In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar and shortening. Beat in eggs. Add the sour milk and blend well.

Sift the dry ingredients and nutmeg together. Blend well and turn out onto a floured board.

Roll the dough out to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Use a 3 inch doughnut cutter with the center in place, cut out the donuts and holes.

Heat 2 inches of oil in a 4 qt. pan to 370° F. Fry donuts and holes a few at a time, about 2 – 3 minutes. Turn only once.

While hot, if desired, roll donuts and holes in sugar and cinnamon or confectionary sugar.
